Folsom resident Hla Elkhatib has officially announced her candidacy for Folsom City Council in District 2. Elkhatib announced her intentions in a campaign press release Wednesday morning.
Hla is a lifelong resident of Folsom and a proud product of our local school system. She is a Folsom High School graduate, Folsom Lake College alumna, and a former Folsom Cordova Unified School District intern. Hla also received a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in human rights from the neighboring University of California, Davis.
“I am excited to announce my candidacy for Folsom City Council in District 2,” said Hla. “I have grown up in this city and am ready to give back by bringing the needs of our neighborhoods to the forefront of the City Council. As City Councilmember, I will work to invest in our youth, foster collaborative partnerships with our schools, and create stronger and safer neighborhoods by addressing the underlying causes of homelessness and public safety issues impacting all Folsom residents.”
“Folsom is a great place to grow up, I believe we can make it an even better place for all Folsom residents to thrive,” said Hla. “We need to invest in our neighborhoods, support our small businesses, and work to ensure that threats to public safety, like fentanyl in our schools, are eliminated with proper preventive measures. As your City council member, I will be a tireless advocate for the people of Folsom and their neighborhoods.”
Hla’s previous experience includes working on pressing policy issues including public safety, health, human services, and civil rights at the California State Senate. She first launched her career in policy as a Senate Fellow in the prestigious California Senate Capital Fellows Program, a vital experience that shaped her policy expertise. She understands what it takes to craft effective policy and has the decision-making skills to lead Folsom to a bigger and brighter future. Aside from her experience at the legislature, Hla is a law student and small business owner who aims to use her business and legal skills to give back to her community.
Hla’s campaign will focus on building a broad coalition of support from residents, community leaders, and organizations on both a local and state level. She plans to engage voters through town hall meetings and canvassing every neighborhood.
