The 2023 High School Football post season kicked off across the region last week for most teams, except those from the Folsom area. This week, its back to business for Folsom High, Vista del Lago and Oak Ridge as they take to the field in their quest for post season success and ultimately a section or state title.

After last week’s bye, the top seeded Folsom Bulldogs will begin their playoffs at home against Cosumnes Oaks. Cosumnes Oaks comes into Friday’s game after opening their playoff run with a victory over Lincoln of Stockton last week, a game they earned with a close finish of 37-34.

The Bulldogs who wrapped up their season at 8-2 are seeking their 10th section title since 2010, 12th overall since 1989. Folsom has only lost this year to the powerhouses of Serra of San Mateo and De La Salle in the early non- league portion of the season.

For the second seeded Vista del Lago Eagles, the first round of the playoffs pits them against Rio Americano this Friday night. The last time the Eagles played Rio Americano was last month. Both teams went into that contest undefeated in league play and only one remained as such when it ended with a 41-15 victory for Vista.

After having last week off, the Eagles are prepared to host the Eagles Friday night and hope to quelch any possibilities of redemption from their Capital Valley League rivals. Rio Americano will come into Friday’s game with the momentum of a victory over Fairfield last Friday night.

Just up the hill in El Dorado Hills, the Oak Ridge Trojans will return to action as they face the Division I sixth seeded Turlock at home.  Last week, Turlock trounced Sheldon 57-14. While Oak Ridge has had another strong season with eight victories, they are the No. 3 seed in the Sac Joaquin Section Division I brackets.

The loss of the second position came on their final game of the regular season when they fell to Rocklin.  The other heartbreaking loss of the season came against Folsom in the first league match-up of the season.

Seven divisions consisting of 84 teams are in the playoff hunt this year. After the early rounds at the respective school stadiums, six out of seven division title games will be held at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento Nov. 24-25. The remaining title game will be held Nov. 24 at St. Mary’s High in Stockton.
